A few weeks ago I wrote a post about basic supplies for cake decorating. I made a list with links to 3 of my very favorite basic baking supplies. These 3 supplies are decorating tools that I think every baker should have.
Today, I want to share some baking supplies that are not exactly considered basic supplies or tools for cake decorating, but supplies for intermediate to advanced bakers. This list will include items that will take your cake game to the next level, these supplies are great to have in your kitchen if you are an avid baker, and will help you achieve different cake decorating techniques.
If you’re on a beginner level, thats perfect! These supplies will definitely help you, but since cake decorating can seem so overwhelming, I do suggest starting with this list HERE. BUT if you’re up for a challenge, I highly recommend using these cake decorating supplies as well!
My Favorite Cake Decorating Tools:
- Turntable
- Icing Comb: Textured
- Icing Scraper/Smoother
- Cake Leveler
- Straight Edge Pans
- Squeeze Bottle
- Flower Nail
- Acrylic Disc
Turntable: A turntable is one of my very favorite decorating tools and one that I use with every single cake I make, it allows bakers to quickly decorate cakes while also keeping the cake elevated for decorating hard to reach places like the bottom and sides of a cake. Putting a non-slip pad underneath the cake board can also help keep the cake in place while decorating the cake.
Icing Comb and smoother: I love using metal icing scrapers, they are a great way to add texture or stripes to a cake. You can also use a scraper to smooth out buttercream without leaving any marks. You can heat up your metal scraper for any pesky buttercream spots that need smooth, but I find that using the scraper alone does a fantastic job smoothing out my cake sides, so I don’t heat mine up.
Cake Leveler: I use my cake leveler on every single cake layer. Most of my cakes actually come out pretty evenly, but I like to trim just a tiny bit off the top of my cake layers to make them completely flat all over. A cake leveler will help to make sure your stacked cake is leveled without leaning to one side.
Straight Edge Pans: I always, always recommend using a straight edge pan when baking cakes. This will help keep the outside edges of your cake even with every single layer on your cake. This is especially helpful when stacking a cake, and when adding buttercream to the sides of the cake.
Squeeze Bottle: A squeeze bottle is used when adding any type of fillings (such as ganache) to a cake or cupcakes. I also use a squeeze bottle to apply ganache drips to my cakes.
Flower Nail: A flower nail is used to make icing flowers. I always use my flower nail when piping buttercream roses and other flowers. The nail is small enough so you can easily hold it between your fingers and spin it slowly, but it is large enough to fit a decent size piped rose on top.
Acrylic Disc: Acrylic discs are an amazing item to add to your decorating tool box, especially if you want to achieve sharp edges at the top of your cake. They also help you add an even layer of icing to the outside of the cake, and helps with getting your icing perfectly smooth. I bought an acrylic disc slightly larger than my cake layer and I lay it on top of my cake before adding my final layer of buttercream. My icing scraper will hit the edge of the disc on top of the cake which gives my cake a smooth and even buttercream layer. I definitely recommend using one!
