Are you a Candy Corn fan? My kids love Candy Corn, and I love to decorate my cakes and cupcakes with it. It is such a fun and vibrant candy which makes it perfect for Halloween themed cakes, cupcakes or cookies.
I wanted to make a Halloween cake focusing on the Candy Corn colors of yellow, orange and white. And today I’m going to walk you through how I made this striped Candy Corn cake with piped details.
Supplies needed:
- Crumb coated cake
- Piping bags
- Buttercream frosting
- Wilton tips: 1M, 18, 104 and 32
- Striped Comb
- Icing Scraper
- Gel Food Color
- Candy Corn
How to make a Candy Corn Halloween cake:
Step 1: Separate your buttercream into 3 bowls, color 1 bowl orange and the other yellow, leaving the 3rd bowl with white buttercream.
Step 2: Cover the cake in white buttercream, using the stripe comb, comb out the stripes. Freeze or refrigerate your cake until the buttercream is no longer soft.
Step 3: Fill 2 piping bags, one with orange buttercream, and the other with yellow. Cut a small tip off of each bag. Pipe orange and yellow onto the indented stripes. My stripe pattern from bottom to top: white, orange, white, yellow, white, orange, white, yellow. Continue repeating the pattern until you have no stripes left. Smooth out the buttercream with an icing scraper. For more detailed instructions on making a striped cake click HERE.
Step 4: Refrigerate your cake for 40 minutes. While the cake is in the fridge, prepare your piping bags:
- White buttercream with tip 1M (rosettes)
- White buttercream with tip 18 (star tip)
- Orange buttercream with tip 104 (ruffles)
- Yellow buttercream with tip 32 (star tip)
Step 5: Using an icing scraper, mark your angle on the cake. This will be your guide for piping the buttercream details. Using your filled and colored piping bags, pipe your designs around the cake. I like to start with my big rosettes, using tip 1M, followed by my ruffle tip 104. Next I use my tip 32, and last I use tip 18 to fill in any spaces or gaps.
Step 6: Add Candy Corn to your cake by pressing down lightly on top of the buttercream icing.
This design is perfect with any cake flavor, and as always, my cakes are covered in my American buttercream recipe.
