I’m excited to talk about how to freeze cake layers. Thats right, I said it… you can freeze cake layers.
Have you ever felt like you didn’t have the time to make a homemade cake? I know for me, when my kids have a birthday party coming up, I feel so stressed out with the mile long to-do list for their birthday party. Whether you’re hosting the party at your home, or at a venue, there is still so much to do. Buying gifts, prepping gift bags, cleaning, grocery shopping, and getting all the decor. For my family, we often have visitors come into town to celebrate birthdays which means we’re also hosting someone in our home.
OR Maybe you want to try cake decorating on a weekend, but between running errands, making visits with friends or attending your child’s soccer game, you just don’t have the time to fit it all in. Suddenly its Sunday afternoon, and you’re exhausted. Making a cake and then decorating it doesn’t sound fun anymore.
Sometimes its just so hard to find the time to make a homemade cake, let alone decorate one.
Whatever the reasons may be (or maybe just because you want to try to freeze cake layers for fun), I’m here to tell you that you CAN freeze cake layers. Yep, I said it. Freezing cakes can be a life saver. Freezing cakes is the best way to decorate when you just don’t have time to do everything at once. Freezing cakes will definitely make cake decorating less hectic and stressful. Freezing cakes is AMAZING.
AND, did you know that freezing cake layers can actually add the perfect amount of moisture to a cake? This will make your cake extra delicious. Seriously.
Heres Why I Love To Freeze Cake Layers:
I often have clients that order both a cake and cupcakes to match and with some of my recipes, this means I will have some leftover cake batter. I refuse to waste any precious cake batter. And, why waste it when I can so easily bake and freeze it for later?
So when this happens, I will grab an extra cake pan and bake some extra cake for my personal use to use later. I’ll freeze this extra cake layer, and usually I use it to make cakesickes for my family, or other goodies. Sometimes I have enough extra layers of cake in my freezer to stack a whole cake for my family to consume. I love doing this because my family gets to eat some of my cake and I get to practice different buttercream techniques with full creative freedom. Win, Win.
What You Need To Freeze Cake Layers:
- Foil
- Saran wrap/ cling wrap
- Leveled Cake Layers
How to Freeze Cake Layers:
Making sure your cake is completely cooled, use your leveler to level the top of the cake. I like to do this because I can stack my cake completely frozen and I don’t have to wait for my cake to thaw out when I’m ready to start decorating at a later date.
Cover the cake completely with saran wrap, being sure to cover the top and edges. Repeat with another layer of saran wrap, doubling the cake tightly.
Take the alunimun foil, and cover the cake again, being sure that the cake is completely covered. Repeat with another layer of foil.
Label the top of the cake with the flavor, size and date. And repeat for every layer of cake that you are freezing.
A few tips when freezing cake layers:
- You can stack your layers on top of each other in the freezer IF you put a cake board between each layer. This way, each layer has a flat surface to rest on wile freezing. I don’t do this, because I have a deep chest freezer with plenty of room to lay the layers flat with nothing else touching them.
- If frozen correctly, cake layers can stay in the freezer for up to 3 months. Though, I have really only frozen mine for a week or so when I’m in a pinch.
- I totally understand that freezing cake layers is not for everyone, some people like to bake and decorate the day of. But I definitely recommend trying this at least once to see if it works for you and your cake. Its best to try out if you’re making a cake for fun or just for your family to consume.
