What is a cake trifle? Simply put, it’s a dessert made up of layers of cake and frosting. I always like to throw in some extra flavors and textures to my cake trifles, for example, in this recipe I added pecans and caramel sauce. I love that I can whip up a cake trifle in under 1 hour, and feed a large gathering, it can even be made the night before. Plus, it always turns out gorgeous and impressive in a trifle dish! Win, win!
Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and this Pumpkin Spice Cake Trifle is a perfect addition to any dessert table this fall. Made with pumpkin spice cake, cheesecake flavored whipped cream, pecans and caramel sauce, this recipe is a favorite for all pumpkin lovers!
Pumpkin Spice Cake Trifle Cake Ingredients:
Pumpkin Spice Cake:
- 1 box spice cake mix
- 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
Cheesecake Whipped Cream Frosting Ingredients:
- 2 cups cold milk
- 2 (3.4 ounce) packages cheesecake flavor instant pudding and pie filling
- 2 cups whipped topping (from the tub)
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 3/4 cup caramel sauce (I used ice cream topping)
How to make a Pumpkin Spice Cake Trifle:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13x9inch cake pan with cooking spray.
- Mix together all cake ingredients: spice cake mix, pudding, pumpkin puree, water, oil, eggs, and pumpkin pie spice. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 45-50 minutes.
- Once cake is cooled, cut into 1-inch cubes.
- With a wire whisk, mix milk and cheesecake pudding. Allow to set for about 2 minutes.
- Mix in whipped topping and pumpkin puree.
- Assemble the cake trifle: layer 1/3 of the cake cubes on the bottom of the dish. Add 1/3 of the cream mixture on top. Add 1/3 chopped pecans and drizzle with ¼ of the caramel topping. Repeat layers 2 more times ending with pecans and caramel sauce.
- Refrigerate 1 hour before serving.
