The Best Oreo Buttercream

Have you ever tasted Oreo buttercream?!  Oh my gosh, it is so so good!

I’ve made Oreo buttercream so many times over the past few years.  It is wonderful on top of cupcakes, as a filling in cakes (sometimes I even add some sprinkles in the filling for funfetti cakes), and it’s also perfect for covering a whole cake.

Recently, I made a Minecraft themed cake for my sons 9th birthday.  He is obsessed with Minecraft and had requested two things for his cake: Minecraft blocks and Oreo Buttercream.

We decided on a chocolate cake, with an oreo buttercream filling, and chocolate ganache drips on the outside to really bring out the Oreo flavor.  Because I don’t use a lot of fondant on my cakes, we also agreed on just a few Minecraft type squares along the bottom of the cake, and some Oreos on top, covered with sprinkles to give the cake a pop of color.

I usually use Oreo buttercream to cover a cake, or as frosting on top of a cupcake.  When using it as a filling, I will sometimes also add some bigger crushed Oreo pieces on top of the buttercream layer.  When making cupcakes, you can fill the chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream, and then top it with Oreo frosting to really reflect the Oreo cookie.

I’m excited to share my Oreo buttercream recipe with you today.  For this recipe, I usually use about 10-12 Oreo cookies and I like to crush them with the blender.  It’s really important that the cookies are crushed up thoroughly.  If there are chunks of Oreos in your buttercream, I’m sure it would taste delicious, but it would actually be pretty hard to use in a piping bag with a piping tip. Having large cookie chunks can also be hard to smooth out when icing your final cake layer.  So, if you’re planning on using a piping tip or smoothing out the buttercream, its best to finely crush the Oreos until they’re almost a powder.

Another note about this recipe, and all buttercream recipes in general. Because the recipe uses butter, always make sure your butter is room temperature. I like to beat my butter with a stand mixer alone in the bowl for a good 2 minutes to make sure its all fluffy and creamy without any chunks of butter. And when using vanilla, you can use any kind really, it doesn’t have to be clear. If you would like to read more about buttercream basics, be sure to check out this post.
